PRESS ROOM

International Pediatric Medical Opportunity

Issa Trust Foundation is launching a new program, the first-ever pediatric medical rotation program in Jamaica 12 months out of the year, in partnership with Global Healing (www.globalhealing.org) and Jamaica’s Northeast Regional Health Authority.

The pediatric rotation program will involve pediatricians, third year pediatric residents, pediatric specialists, and biomedical engineers from the United States working in Annotto Bay Hospital/Clinic, Port Maria Hospital/Clinic and Port Antonio Hospital.

Issa Trust Foundation’s work to date has included annual medical missions in the Westmoreland and St. Mary regions.  These missions were planned and carried out in partnership with the University of Iowa Children’s Hospital and volunteer medical providers from Philadelphia, Maryland and California.

Issa works with children and medical providers in Jamaica to improve children’s lives and to ensure better access to healthcare in Jamaica. Together, we aim for sustainable development of healthcare services – beyond short-term or emergency interventions – as a model for Jamaica and beyond.

First and foremost, the aim of this project is to treat children and build a more sustainable, self-sufficient local care system in Jamaica. Sustainability is at the core of our work. By training local technicians as biomedical engineers, we will ensure that vital medical equipment never sits broken and unattended but instead serves its purpose to help provide superior medical care.

Issa is confident that not only will it provide first-rate care to underserved children in Jamaica,  but that those who experience the benefits of volunteering on the children’s behalf will become lifelong advocates for healthcare for all.

Volunteer

The clinic team consists of a volunteer pediatrician, third year pediatric resident, who will work along Jamaican doctors.  Volunteers typically rotate on a four week plus basis.  Volunteers will face challenges of delivering care with limited resources, both diagnostically and therapeutically, in a dynamic clinical setting.  A typical day consists of newborn exams and inpatient ward rounds, followed by a busy outpatient clinic.  Must be fluent in English and will enlist the help in clinic for “translation” needs.

Issa Trust Foundation provides housing at Couples Resort, an all inclusive resort for all physician volunteers.  Volunteers will have use of the resort facilities, except lunch (Monday thru Friday).  Additionally, Issa Trust Foundation offers transportation to and from the clinics at no cost.  Participation in the rotation program is unremunerated, volunteer opportunity.
