GLOBAL
HEALING MENTORS ISSA TRUST FOUNDATION
Two
Organizations Collaborate to Establish Pediatric Program in Jamaica
BERKELEY, Calif., – March 16, 2010 – The Global Healing Board
of Directors, a leading non-profit organization devoted to
providing modern medical solutions to the developing world,
approved a $50,000 grant to the Issa Trust Foundation to implement
a pediatric medical rotation program among three hospitals in
northeastern Jamaica: Port Maria Hospital/Clinic and Annotto Bay
Hospital/Clinic, both of which are in the Saint Mary parish; and
Port Antonio Hospital/Clinic, which is in the Portland parish.
This program is composed of an educational and technical focus.
Regarding the former, residents and attendings participating in
the program will rotate at various hospitals within these three
parishes and work alongside Jamaican doctors, clinical officers,
nurses, aides, and matrons. Assistance will focus on the
management of HIV/AIDS, other parasitic infections, and common
routine health problems such as diabetes and hypertension. Dr.
Stacy McConkey, University of Iowa Children’s Hospital, and Diane
Pollard, Vice President, Issa Trust Foundation, will be
supervising these rotations.
For the latter focus, together with the Ministry of Health and
North-East Regional Health Authority, the Issa Trust Foundation
will evaluate the technology needs of the respective parishes and
employ American biomedical engineers to provide training on
operation, maintenance and repair of various types of medical
equipment.
“Issa Trust Foundation has
a unique advantage in that we
already have an established
relationship with the Ministry
of Health for six years and
will be once again combining
forces for this project in
order to improve childcare in
Jamaica,” said Diane Pollard.
“We are familiar with the
country and its medical needs,
and we know that the families
will greatly benefit from this
program and the benefits it
has to offer.”
The Saint Mary and Portland
Parishes have a total
population of about 195,000,
approximately half of which
are children under the age of
18. Despite having such a
large population of children,
Jamaica has limited resources
for pediatric medicine.
This program is modeled
after Global Healing’s Roatan
Volunteer Pediatric Clinic in
Honduras and is Global
Healing’s first mentorship
program. The goal is to
implement a self-sustained
pediatric program in Jamaica
within five years by providing
local staff with clinical
training in general pediatric
medicine.
The Couples Resort in Saint
Mary will be providing
volunteers with in-kind
assistance including lodging
and food. Global Healing, in
addition to providing the
grant, will also serve as a
lifeline by offering ongoing
consultation and informational
resources as needed.
